Laser Surgery. Winter Park Veterinary Hospital is one of the most experienced veterinary hospitals capable of performing laser surgery. Laser technology reduces surgical trauma to your pet, improves recovery and can shorten their hospital stay. A laser is a device that produces an extremely powerful and concentrated beam of light. Unlike traditional surgery with a scalpel or scissors which can bruise or crush tissue, only the laser light beam touches the tissue. Laser surgery provides the same benefits to pets as human patients: less pain, less bleeding, less infection, less swelling and discomfort after surgery, and the ability to resume normal activities sooner. Laser surgery can be used to make unique bloodless laser incisions, as well as to remove unhealthy tissue such as tumors, without excessive loss of blood typical of conventional scalpel based surgery.

Our surgical facilities include:

• A fully equipped surgical suite capable to perform most types of soft tissue and orthopedic surgery

Pre-Surgical Care

Prior to surgery, all patients are carefully screened, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet. We require pre-surgical blood work so we can evaluate your pet’s kidney, liver and heart function prior to undergoing anesthesia.

Patient Monitoring

We provide the same level of patient monitoring that you would receive if you were having surgery in a human hospital. We monitor all of your pet’s vital signs with state of the art equipment as well as manual techniques. Pets are monitored during surgery using pulse oximetry, respiratory monitoring, EKG, temperature monitoring, and are given oxygen.

After Surgery

Once the procedure is completed, a member of our nursing staff will sit with and comfort your pet until they are awake and aware. Your pet will wake up to warm blankets and a caring smile. A member of our team will call you with a status report. When you pick up your pet, the doctor or nurse will review the procedure with you and send you home with easy to understand aftercare instructions. We will call you within a few days to check on your pet and answer any additional questions.

Pain Management

At Winter Park Veterinary Hospital, we believe in maximizing the comfort of your pet during and after his/her procedure. Proper pain management also improves your pet’s recovery and speeds the healing process. We administer pain medication before beginning the procedure, during the procedure and post-operatively as required by your pet. We use a multi-modal approach to pain management. A multi-modal approach refers to the layered administration of small amounts of different drugs to minimize any pain that your pet might feel during or after the procedure. Because we administer lower doses of each individual drug, your pet will experience fewer adverse side effects, more complete pain relief and faster post-operative recovery.

By using a multi-modal approach, we use quantitatively far less of any one drug during the least amount of time to keep your pet pain free, which is the safest pain management technique possible.
